MAGNABOSCHI BRITISH CEMETERY

Il Cimitero Militare Britannico della Val di Magnaboschi, situato di fronte all’ex Cimitero Militare Italo-Austriaco, ospita 183 Caduti dell’Impero Britannico. Nel dopoguerra è stato ricostruito come altri simili in Altopiano per ordine della Commonwealth War Graves Commission che ne segue da allora anche la manutenzione. I terreni sui quali sorgono sono stati donati dal popolo italiano a quello della Gran Bretagna e sono a tutti gli effetti entità extraterritoriali. In ciascuno di loro, sotto la grande croce in pietra, è riportata l’epigrafe scelta da Rudyard Kipling “Their name liveth for evermore” (il loro nome vivrà per sempre). Per raggiungere il sito dall’ufficio turistico di Cesuna, procedere verso sud, per circa 2 km fino alla Cappella di S. Antonio (con tetto rosso). Da qui prendere il sentiero posteriore che dopo circa 100 metri porta al cimitero. Di seguito sono proposte alcune rarissime fotografie della visita di Lord Cavan prima dello scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale. Frederick Lambart, X Conte di Cavan (1865-1946), Comandante delle Forze Britanniche in Italia nella Grande Guerra, Feldmaresciallo e aiutante di campo di Re Giorgio V, vincitore della Somme (1916) di Passchendaele (1917) e di Vittorio Veneto (1918), ufficiale superiore pluridecorato con le più alte onoreficienze del Regno Unito oltre alla Legion d’Onore Francese, all’Ordine Militare di Savoia e alla Distinguished Service Medal statunitense, torna fra i suoi soldati Caduti e sepolti in uno dei cimiteri britannici. Oltre alle immagini contemporanee di Stefano Aluisini e Ruggero Dal Molin, è possibile ammirare quelle gentilmente concesse dalla Associazione Storico Culturale Fronte Sud in occasione della cerimonia di commemorazione del 2008 alla quale sono intervenuti diversi rappresentanti dei combattenti Scozzesi.
